Now press OK to close the Project Properties dialog, and for each section document you want to omit from the sample, type ‘notsample’ into the Tags field. Type ‘notsample’ as the value for this option. Once the configuration has been created, search for ‘Exclude sections matching tags’ in the search field at the bottom of the dialog. Type ‘Epub Sample’ for the new configuration name, and select a configuration to base this one on, or just press OK to select a format. To get there, press Edit next to the configuration drop-down in the Jutoh Control Panel (bottom left of the Jutoh window). Create a new configuration called ‘Sample Epub’ using the ‘+’ button on the Configurations panel in Project Properties. Let’s say you wanted to be able to create a sample Epub. Open the document properties dialog using right click or control click over the project outline, or using the menu command Document | Document Properties (Shift+Alt+Enter). To include or exclude whole section documents, go the document properties and assign a tag name (or several tag names) to the Tags field. Tagging whole section and media documents Specifying paragraph styles to include or omit.Specifying string variables in your content. These are the different methods available to you for changing the book without editing content each time: The different values of options in your configurations will determine how the book is created. So to create your sample, you just select ‘Sample Epub’ and press Compile. You might have a ‘Sample Epub’ configuration that creates an ebook containing the first couple of chapters of your book. There are several ways of creating conditional content, suitable for different tasks or kinds of content, but they all depend on the fact that you can have multiple configurations, even for the same format. With Jutoh, you can do all this without needing to split your project into different copies, which can become a time-consuming, confusing mess. Or perhaps you need to include different audio or video media for different formats. Or you may need to add extra pages, blank or otherwise, for a print book. You may need different book identifiers, or different text describing where to buy the book, or perhaps you’d like to create a small sample for your web site that can be easily recreated when you update the book. Please see note at the bottom for an update.īy popular demand, this episode I’m going to show you how to create fixed layout eBooks in Jutoh. It’s common to want to create different versions of your book for different distributors, formats or purposes. It will also be EPUBs for Barnes & Noble, iTunes, et cetera. In this lesson I’m going to discuss how to create Kindle and EPUB fixed layout books using Jutoh. It’s been asked of me by several people so I decided to make a quick video for you. If you’re interested in Jutoh, which if you are an author or a publisher, if you’re still doing it the old-fashioned way, you’re crazy. The first thing you do is understand why you need a fixed layout book. If you just have a picture in there and the picture’s not that important, it’s not a big deal to make a fixed layout book. The text and the picture go exactly where you put them, and they lose a lot of the flexibility on eReaders, There’s a lot of issues with file sizes, picture sizes, all that kind of stuff, and there’s no software that’s really able to deal with that since it’s controlled by the actual devices themselves. I’ll show you an example of that when we’re done making this picture book. Many uses would be comic books, picture books, like I’m going to do here kids books that have a picture and then text underneath it, those type of things, where the picture needs to be exactly where it is in the book. It can’t just be random wherever the flowable layout puts it, like half of an image on one page and half on the other. I’m going to go a little bit from scratch. Somebody was asking me if you already know how to do projects and that, this will be nothing new. There’s only one slight change, so we’ll go up here to File, New Project. That was another client, but I’m going to erase this anyway. It’s automatically putting it where it needs to go. We saw that in the other videos I have, but for fixed layout I don’t bother. Normally, you just say Normal Reflowable Book. In this case we’re going to go to Fixed Layout. Jutoh makes it nice to actually have different book styles for different devices. We can go here to Page Templates and you can see Kindle Fire.
